Plant Based Diet: What and Why

What?

Plant-based eating places a focus on foods primarily from plants. This means that not only does it include fruits and vegetables, but also seeds, nuts, whole grains, legumes, beans, and oils. Consuming a plant-based diet does not mean that you are vegetarian or vegan. Actually, it means that you are consciously choosing more of your foods from plant sources. In a plant-based diet, foods are usually consumed raw, though you are able to have cooked food, too.

A whole plant-based diet cuts out unhealthy food items such as refined sugar or refined grains. In a way, it celebrates plant foods. It based on the following principles:

  • Whole foods: natural foods that are not heavily processed. These include whole, unrefined, or minimally refined ingredients.
  • Plant-based:  food that comes from plants. It does not include animal ingredients such as meat, milk, eggs, or honey.

What to Eat

Fresh fruit: Any type of fruit including apple, bananas, grapes, strawberries, citrus fruits, etc. Remember, consuming the locally produced fruit would give you far more benefit, in terms of nutrition, than any important fruit ever will.

Vegetables: Green, leafy, locally grown vegetables are believed to be among the healthiest of all foods. Other than that, the family of gourds, peppers, cabbage, cauliflower, lady’s finger, eggplant (aubergine), cucumber, etc.

Tubers: These are root vegetables such as arbi (taro root), potatoes, carrots, turnip, etc. Essentially, everything that grows underground.

Whole grains: These include grains, cereals, brown rice, millet (Pearl millet or bajra; foxtail millet or Kangni/Kakum; Sorghum or Jowar/jwar; finger millet or ragi/ nachni), whole wheat, oats, etc.

Seeds and Nuts: Flax, chia, sunflower, pumpkin seeds and nuts such as almonds, pistachios, walnuts, cashew, pecans, etc.

Legumes: Beans of any kind, plus lentils, pulses, etc.

WHY?

Health Benefits

There are several health benefits linked with plant-based eating. Let’s look at them.

Cardiovascular Health

Heart disease is usually due to cholesterol levels that are high in the blood that will obstruct as well as narrow the arteries leading to the heart to work additional difficult.
